Some surefire ways to avoid the push shot

One of the ways you could go about fixing the push shot is by starting to identify that this is a problem. The push shot, best known for the ball to travel to the right of the target line, is not a tough nut to crack, but just needs the golfer to spend time practicing.

Why does the push shot come into the picture?

The push shot happens because a golfer hits the ball with an open club face. As opposed to the pull shot where the golfer hits the ball with a closed club face, the open club face causes the ball spinning out of the target line. It moves towards the right and continues to travel in the same direction.

Push shot is really another name for a delayed shot, something people do unconsciously. In fact, if you delay your shot for some seconds, you could end up hitting the ball at the wrong time and the wrong place. This results in the ball moving from the intended direction to the target line.

When the clubface hits the ball sooner than you expected, you will find the ball traveling in a direction not to the line of the target. Actually, this happens because the clubface is a touch too open on hitting the ball, which is not desirable.

To help you eliminate the push shot, you will find a lot strategies around, some on the paper and some that can be implemented. But if you are a beginner, there is nothing better than going back to your basics. And the basics say that you need to turn your body ever so slightly to ensure you avoid getting the push.

Pro golfers would advise a rather systematic approach to fix the problem of hitting push shots. They would first advise you would get about not hitting the push shot is to transfer your body weight to the left foot. Also make note to that you would need to rotate your body slightly. Now, a lot of people actually go for the jugular and move their body backwards and forwards, which should be avoided.

The one thing you could do after you have practiced the previous step is to pick up the club and practice the same movement with the club. Make note to have the buckle of your club point towards the target at the end of the swing.

The objective here is to ensure that the ball moves in a straight line. This you can accomplish by hitting the ball with a closed clubface. On digging deep, you will find that the positioning of the right forearm slightly turned over the left ensures that the clubface is closed when it hits the ball.
